What is OMBE and what does it stand for?

OMBE stands for Ocean, Mind, Body and Equipment.

It is an approach with a focus on syncing all four major aspects within your surfing. When all four are in sync, your surfing will improve and you will easily enter a flow state within the ocean.

You will notice in all good surfers, they are relaxed in their mind and body, allowing them to move with ease, creating effortless style, as well as a deep understanding of the ocean and the right equipment for the conditions.

What is The OMBE Way?

The OMBE way is a structured approach to improving anyone's surfing.

It is centred around the framework of Ocean, Mind, Body and Equipment, with training programs covering all aspects or focusing on key areas.

The training programs are broken down into:

Land-based Drills
Water-based Drills
Review and Analysis
Trigger words and Pattern Interrupters
Aiming for the Feeling

Surf training isn't going to the gym and punching out X number of reps. Everything is based on the feeling and where you are on that journey. All of the training has a key focus on aiming for the feeling and allowing you to understand what you should aim for and knowing when you can move onto the next piece of training.

What program should I start first?

This depends on where you are at with your surfing and what you want to achieve. We have two structured pathway programs, one for beginner and one for intermediate. We also have a monthly training subscription designed for all levels.

I am a beginner surfer, what program is for me?

We recommend starting with either the Beginner 6 Week Surf Start Program or the Intermediate 12 Week Surf Smart Program, based on what you want to achieve and where your surfing is. You can do the beginner program and then flow into the intermediate program.

I am an intermediate surfer, what program is for me?

We recommend intermediate surfers to start on the Intermediate 12 Week Surf Smart Program. This program heavily focuses on the fundamentals of surfing which are always an ongoing training to improve your surfing. This program will help break old habits and rebuild the foundations so that you can take your surfing to the next level.

After the 12 Week Program, you will have identified some of your major weaknesses and what you need to focus on the most. You can then do one of the programs that focus on those issues.

I am advanced surfer, what program is for me?

This heavily depends on where your surfing is at and what you need to improve on.

You can start with the Intermediate 12 Week Surf Smart Program and build upon your fundamentals, identifying what areas need improving. We are developing an Advanced Manoeuvres program which will allow you to focus on single manoeuvres one at a time.

Otherwise there is 1% Better Monthly Training subscription where we run new training every month, based on community feedback and requests, designing each challenge to suit all levels.

Can I repeat the programs?

You can repeat all of the programs as many times as you like. They are designed with the idea that you will revisit them over time.

Can I go at my own pace?

Some of the programs are set in weekly structures. These are recommendations and do not need to be followed. You can slow down and go at your own pace, working on your weaknesses and moving on when you are ready.

Do I need any equipment to do the programs?

You do not need any equipment to start any of the programs. However, some of the training programs will utilise a bosu ball and/or surf skateboard.

Do I have access to the program forever?

The Beginner 6 Week Surf Start, Intermediate 12 Week Surf Smart and 1% Better Monthly training each come seperate, with the 1% Better being a subscription. The other two programs are yours for life.

How does the training work? What type of training is it?

The training is a mix of land-based and water-based training drills, as well as theory. The programs will walk you through the theory, establishing a why to all of your training, allowing you to understand what you will be training and how it impacts your surfing. The drills will establish the how, and show you how to exactly replicate the drills.

All of the drills will be accompanied by aiming for the feeling. This will explain when to know you are doing it right or if you need to keep working on the drill. The training is not set out as do X number of reps as everyones starting point and learning process is slower. It is all about do it until it feels natural.

What if I'm landlocked or only get to a beach every so often?

That is fine. all of the programs are created with that in mind. If a program includes water-based training, simply save it up until you have the chance to get to the beach.

How does the land-based training work? Shouldn't I just surf more?

The land-based training is designed to break patterns and add in the repetitions. This is vital in building the muscle memory and neurological pathways to learn and develop skills. The idea is by simulating surfing on land, we can rapidly develop these systems. When we enter the surf, we can further build upon them and allow our bodies to follow the muscle memory we have been training.

Yes, surfing is great but the amount of training in a 2-hour surf is minimal compared to 30 minutes of land training.

How does the water-based training fit in?

After you have been developing the muscle memory on land, you will need to start converting the training to replicating it in the water. The best way to do this is to set on focus and work on one change in your surfing and not several. Simplify it and allow yourself to see an improvement in one area.

The next best thing to do is to let go, don't bring stress into the ocean. Focus on having fun and trying to automatically repeat the muscle memory. Tension is the enemy of good technique and style.

I have been surfing for years and years, how do I replace my bad habits?

One at a time. The programs will help identify the bad habits, replace them and introduce a vital part of your training: trigger words. These are pattern interrupters that help you associate movement with words. As you say a trigger word and connect it to a movement, you are teaching your brain and body to repeat a movement based on that word. As you enter the surf, repeat these trigger words and slowly correct the bad habits.

Is there a difference between the App and the website?

No, the content is exactly the same. The only difference is how you view it.

Is my progress synced between the app and the website?

Yes, your progress is carried over between the app and the website. You can pick up where you left off.

How do I access my programs via the app and website?

Your programs will be shown on the app in the menu in the top left and the website will show them in the sidebar.

Where can I see what events are upcoming?
